SOCIAL MOTION | Icy and Sot

Born in Tabriz, Iran, Icy (1985) and Sot (1991) currently reside in Brooklyn, New York. The inseparable brothers began their careers in 2006 with the use of stencils. They quickly left their mark on Iranian culture and the world of urban art with their murals, performances, videos and installations. All of their works address the same themes: capitalism, the general lack of regard for ecological issues, and social and political discord. Their work appears on walls and galleries throughout Iran, the United States, Germany, China, Norway, and many other countries around the world. Their message in unequivocal: they are fighting for a world free of all forms of censorship, borders, war and violence.
The exhibition “Social Motion” is the result of a long series of experimentations. This collection of paintings shares a common medium: cut steel. Through these works, both fixed and moving, Icy and Sot denounce a challenging society that is obsessed with performance and speed. They seize subjects on the fly and apply them to different media, as if trying to suspend this perpetual race. For Icy and Sot, slowing down doesn’t change anything if you don’t actually stop and question your actions.
