Valérie Gobeil

Born in 1981, Valérie Gobeil lives and works in Montreal. She completed a bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM in 2008. The same year, she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. In 2014, she completed a master’s degree in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM.

Since 2009, her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, France and Hungary and is part of numerous private collections internationally. Her work can also be found in public collections in Canada.

Valérie Gobeil’s universe is visual, tactile, textured and colourful. Her work reflects her interest in textiles, painting and drawing. She uses “tufting,” a semi-industrial technique of punch embroidery that allows her to paint with fibre on a large scale.

Her artistic approach involves researching the pictorial potential of textiles. She reflects on the fibre as one would think about paint. Her considerations are strictly formal and are not based on a visual result. She focuses on this exploration and makes it a perpetual quest for the possibilities the medium has to offer.

For Valérie Gobeil, testing colours, compositions, textures and patterns opens up new avenues for exploration. The result is tactile works of colourful organic forms where spaces intermingle and create new dialogues.
