Sylvain Bouthillette, born in 1963, lives and works in Montreal. A multidisciplinary artist, his work balances between music, dance, installation, sculpture, painting and photography. Whatever the medium, his works tend to demonstrate that ridicule, impermanence, confusion, instability ambiguity, uncertainty, and embarrassment are all forms of liberation if we stop believing that life is something stable and definable. His work being as much a mystical search as an aesthetic pursuit, he tries to reconcile spiritual values with the intellectualism of critical discourse.
His work has been shown across Canada, the United States and Europe in various solo and group exhibitions, including Galerie Optica in Montreal, Clint Roenisch Gallery in Toronto, Mendel Art Gallery in Halifax, Front Store Gallery in Basel (Switzerland), Saint Mary's University Art Gallery in Halifax, L’Oeil de Poisson in Quebec City, Reims (France) as part of the Quebec Gold event, Galerie Néon in Lyon (France), and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
His work can be found in the collections of the National Bank, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Giverny Capital, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and several private collections.
