Josiane Lanthier

Born in 1989, Josiane Lanthier lives and works in Baie-Saint-Paul, Canada.

A professional artist since 2008, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in visual arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 2014. The work of award-winning artist Josiane Lanthier appears in various private collections in Canada, Germany, Denmark, Italy and the United States as well as in the corporate collection of Scotiabank.

Through a play on color, texture, luminosity, and overlapping layers, which allows her to manipulate one’s perception and to give her work another dimension, the artist examines color complementarity. Via a juxtaposition of bright, saturated shades mixed with pastels, allowing the colors to radiate, Josiane Lanthier infuses warmth to cool tones, an approach which is at the center of her artistic practice. She appreciates experimenting with different tools, textures, and finishes, forever on the lookout for startling results.

She prefers coloring to drawing, and while the process is more important to her than the subject matter, her creations are nonetheless imbued with nature, with semi abstract landscapes. Organic shapes, the contour lines of a geographical map, painted overtop the background scene, are recurring elements in her work. The result is a vaporous image, this idea of being in a parallel world, of not being certain of where one is, and ultimately, what one sees.

Sometimes, Josiane Lanthier works from photographs that she captures, and on other occasions, from her memory. Rimouski’s Bic, Percé in Gaspésie, or even, Mazunte in Mexico, with its mythical sunsets in vibrant colors, are an important inspiration for her most recent works.
