With the simple acts of miniaturization and thoughtful mises en scène, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians that happen upon his sculptures on the street. Cement Eclipses is a critical definition of our behavior as a social mass. The artwork guides our attention towards the devalued relationship we maintain with the environment, by casting a critical eye on the collateral effects of our rapid evolution. With the skilled eye of a stage director, Cordal places his figurines in locations that quickly open doors to other worlds. The scenes zoom in onto the routine tasks and behaviours of contemporary individuals. Men and women are suspended and isolated in a motion, or pose, which can take on multiple meanings. The humorous and sympathetic figures are easy to relate to: They present elements through which nature, still present, exhibits encouraging symptoms of survival. The precariousness of these anonymous statuettes, laid out on the ground, no higher than a passerby’s foot, represent the transient traces of an imperfect social framework. These small sculptures contemplate the demolition and reconstruction of everything around us, and in doing so, focus our attention on the absurdity of our existence. Isaac Cordal is nonetheless sympathetic towards his little people. Indeed, they elicit empathy for their situations, leisure time, time spent waiting for buses, and even their more tragic moments, such as accidental deaths, suicides, or funerals. The sculptures can be found in gutters, on top of buildings, on top of bus shelters, and many other unusual and unlikely places.
