Duo | Vinna Begin & Benoit Blondeau
For the time of a hybrid exhibition that combines painting and textile art, C.O.A proposes an encounter between Quebec artists Vinna Begin and Benoit Blondeau, and aims to turn its walls into a space of contemplation.
Vinna Begin is born in West Java (Indonesia) and lives in Montreal. Her paintings and drawings contemplate the universal aspects of human nature and existence that precedes ego. The artist starts each work with a colour or gesture, continuing with unmediated responses to each action until a sense of balance is achieved. Begin’s work celebrates both the mystical and natural worlds by depicting the essences of forms and patterns seen in nature—bringing viewers to a more heightened experience.
Originally from Quebec City, Benoit Blondeau works with recycled materials, whether solid, pigment or textiles. Fabrics and patterns play an important role in his art, both materially and emotionally, as they often recall visits to the fair, his grandmother’s quilts or the psychedelic sheets he slept in as a child. The fabrics add a layer of movement and vibration, and offer a materiality that differs from paint. The art he makes does not reproduce the visible; rather, it renders visions or ghosts of the body sentient.
